Definition Paper Topic Proposal

- The word I'm going to be defining is "hookup."
- Hookup: a sexual interaction between two people (who are not in a relationship), which can range from kissing to sex
- While the word "hookup" can have many definitions, I'm going to focus on the sexual aspect of "hookup" because it's a word used so much throughout high school and college, and something many teenagers take part in. I don't think people have a clear definition of a hookup, but the word is used to frequently in high school and college life.  I think hookups have become a prevalent part of teenage life, and so many expectations and repercussions go hand-in-hand with a hookup.
- The purpose of the paper is to first define a hookup and explain the negative situations and expectations that could follow a hooking up with someone (whether drunk or sober).
- I'll be writing to high school and college students, most of whom have experienced a hookup directly or indirectly.

  1. Ok, so this isn't a bad idea. What is a little unclear is the purpose or specific exigence for defining this word. Is it because people don't know what it means? Is it because you want to comment about hookups--in a justifying or condemning way? Or something else? It's true that it's not clearly defined but why does it need to be? The answer to that question is the exigence of your paper.

Also, thing a bit more about your audience in relation to that exigence. If you are trying to justify hookups would you need to speak to those who have experienced them? Of course if you are condemning them then maybe that would be the right audience. However, even adults might not be too taken back by the idea of hookups. After all, most of the adults now grew up in the 70s...

Think about this some more and comment with some clarifications.

  2. The purpose is to comment on hookups in a condemning way. Condemning sounds like a pretty strong word, but it's more or less what I'll be doing in talking about hookups negatively. In connection with my purpose, the audience would be people who have experienced a hookup.

  3. Ok, cool. Yeah, it doesn't have to be as strong as condemning
